Job Description
Job Title: Senior Process Engineer
Location: Houston, TX
Position Type: Full-Time
Company: Carbon Ridge, Inc
About Us: Carbon Ridge (CR) is reducing CO2 emissions from maritime shipping. We've built a next-generation, patent-pending carbon capture solution for the maritime industry which reduces key capture equipment size by 75% and energy consumption by over 50% compared to conventional technology. We've developed the most low-cost, seamless and near-term method to significantly reduce the carbon dioxide (CO2) and other greenhouse gases (GHGs) emitted by large maritime vessels. Global shipping is now regulated to reduce CO2 emissions, making CR's tech not a nice-to-have, but a must-have.
Carbon Ridge is seeking a Senior Process Engineer to join our team focused on the development and deployment of marine onboard carbon capture systems (OCCS) for commercial vessels. This role requires a deep understanding of process engineering fundamentals, carbon capture technologies, and experience using Aspen Plus to support system modeling from early concept through deployment. You will be instrumental in developing system designs that are robust, efficient, and compliant with marine classification and environmental regulations.
What you'll do:
- Develop and maintain steady-state and dynamic Aspen Plus process models of marine carbon capture systems (MEA, mixed amine, or novel solvents).
- Perform mass and energy balances for various carbon capture configurations under realistic marine engine exhaust and operational conditions.
- Generate and support engineering deliverables for pre-FEED, FEED, and Detailed Design stages, including:
- Process Flow Diagrams (PFDs) and Heat & Material Balances (HMBs)
- Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams (P&IDs)
- Process datasheets for key equipment (e.g., absorbers, strippers, heat exchangers)
- Line lists, valve lists, and instrument specifications
- Conduct design optimization studies for space-constrained marine environments, addressing utility loads, absorber sizing, and solvent regeneration efficiency.
- Support hazard analysis (HAZID, HAZOP), operability reviews, and classification society interface.
- Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and control systems teams to integrate OCCS with shipboard power and exhaust systems.
- Support vendor package reviews, specification development, and technical bid evaluations.
- Participate in onboard commissioning planning and FAT/SAT preparation.
- Provide technical support during prototype installations and shipboard integration efforts.
A strong candidate will have the following skills:
- Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Minimum 5 years of experience in process engineering, ideally in oil & gas, power, or environmental systems.
- Proven experience with Aspen Plus or Aspen HYSYS for modeling chemical processes.
- Hands-on experience developing engineering documentation for pre-FEED through Detailed Design phases.
- Familiarity with amine-based carbon capture processes (MEA, mixed amines, etc.).
- Experience with marine systems or working with shipowners, EPCs, or marine classification societies is a strong plus.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to produce clear technical reports and presentations.
- Ability to work with cross-functional engineering teams, fabricators, shipyards, and regulatory bodies in a fast-paced environment.
Bonus Experience (Preferred but not required):
- Master's degree in Chemical Engineering from an accredited university.
- Experience with process or chemical systems onboard vessels.
- Experience with process simulation validation using pilot data or test campaigns.
- Exposure to rotating equipment sizing, solvent management systems, and flue gas conditioning equipment.
- Familiarity with integration of marine automation and control systems (e.g., IAS, PLC-based control).
Join Us:
Be part of a cutting-edge marine innovation effort that helps decarbonize global shipping through practical onboard solutions. You'll contribute directly to systems that are shaping the future of maritime sustainability.
